DINING OUT -- THE CRITIC'S REPORT

November 28, 1992|By ELIZABETH LARGE | ELIZABETH LARGE,Restaurant Critic

Ambassador Dining Room.

Ambassador Dining Room, 3811 Canterbury Road, (410) 467-4799. Other apartment house restaurants have come and gone in Baltimore, but the Ambassador has survived -- remarkably unchanged, by all accounts, in both culinary tradition and atmosphere since it opened in 1931. Even under new owners, this genteel dining room has remained much the same, except that the menu now features good and somewhat fancier American cuisine. Recommendations: the medallions of beef au poivre, salmon with red onion marmalade, crab cakes and fried oysters. But if you long for the old days and homier food, check out the daily specials. $$ -- moderate. (Last reviewed 11/92.)

Ikea Restaurant & Cafe, Ikea, White Marsh Mall.

Ikea Restaurant & Cafe, Ikea, White Marsh Mall. (410) 931-5400. Ikea, the home furnishings store, is known for its inexpensive, high-quality,assemble-it-yourself goods. The same could be said of the Ikea Restaurant & Cafe. It's do-it-yourself in the sense that it's a cafeteria, as excellent a cafeteria as you'll find anywhere. Any of the Swedish dinners is good: Swedish meatballs with ligonberries, baked salmon or strip loin. Plus there are salads, sandwiches, soup and specials. Children will be happy, too: Leave them in the wonderful Ball Room to play while you eat. $ -- inexpensive. (Last reviewed 11/92.)
