Not so long ago, Annapolis was essentially a one-bagel-shop town. Bagels And on West Street had the market cornered on fresh-baked bagels that come very near the real thing: a New York bagel (they say it has something to do with the water there). Well, now Bagels And is getting some competition.

The Bagel Bakery turns out a fine bagel. This chain has 17 other locations, according to its menu, mostly in the suburban Washington area, but the Severna Park location doesn't seem like a franchise operation. It's not the least bit impersonal or scripted the way so many franchise places can be.

The menu includes hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts. Bagels cost 45 cents each, and you can choose from the standard (plain, garlic, sesame, etc.) to the sophisticated (E.T., which means everything, not extra-terrestrial) to the inexcusable (blueberry).

As for the all-important cream cheese, you can go from plain ($1.05 for a 4-ounce container) to fancy ($1.45 for 4 ounces with walnuts, carrots and raisins).

The Bagel Bakery offers gourmet coffee as well as the standard joe, and bagel sandwiches too numerous to mention. With all that to choose from, it was amusing when, on a recent evening visit, several employees behind the counter were deciding what they wanted on the pizza they were about to call out for.
