Morgan staff could change as contracts expire Tuesday

Morgan State football coach Ricky Diggs said yesterday that he hasn't made any decisions about the makeup of his staff, but ZTC it is expected that several assistants' contracts won't be renewed after they expire Tuesday.

Diggs, who survived an attempt by his players to have him ousted, was given control of the Bears' football program by the university's administration Tuesday. A petition signed by 69 players called for Diggs to be replaced by defensive coordinator L. C. Cole. Neither coach will discuss their differences.

Diggs said yesterday that he thought that Cole and Bubba Green, the only full-time assistants, had contracts through next June. The contracts of most of his part-time assistants expire Tuesday.

"Since the decision [by the administration to back him], I haven't had the opportunity to speak to each coach individually," Diggs said. "I haven't made any decisions about the staff. Some of the contracts end Dec. 1 anyway."

In other Morgan State staff matters, the vice president for student affairs said the university would like to hire a track and field coach by mid-December and an athletic director by late January. Leonard Braxton, who held both positions, recently left to coach track and field at Arizona State.

Braxton announced Oct. 9 that he was leaving Morgan State.

"We'll be advertising the athletic director's job soon," Dr. Raymond Downs said. "We'll accept applications in early January. Hopefully, by the end of January, we will at least have identified the leading candidates."
