Bay Ridge Inn applies for breakwater

The owners of the Bay Ridge Inn want to use a 71-foot stone breakwater to control shoreline erosion along the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River.

They have applied to the Army Corps of Engineers to construct the breakwater, using 108 cubic yards of stone, and to restore a beach with 200 cubic yards of sand. The property is located between the Bay Ridge community, which also is working to restore its beach, and Highland Beach.

The Army will consider public comments on the permit application if made before Dec. 21.

Detectives said the burglars broke in through the side door and dismantled an entertainment center in the living room. They took a television, videocassette recorder and stereo equipment.

The upstairs bedrooms had been ransacked and the pillowcases taken off the pillows. Several jewelry boxes, cameras and two guns were taken.

Police said the burglary occurred between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Officer injured during drug arrest

A 33-year-old Annapolis police officer injured his back Tuesday morning in a scuffle with a man accused of selling crack cocaine.

The man allegedly attempted to escape by punching Officer David Garcia in his arm and chest, causing the officer to twist backward, police said. He later spit in the officer's face, police said.

A second city police officer collared the suspect while he was allegedly attempting to swallow a bag of crack, police said.

Bervon I. Summer, 21, of Council Oak Drive in Waldorf, was arrested on three separate drug charges, two counts of battery, resisting arrest and trespassing, police said. He was released yesterday after posting $5,000 bond.
