Thieves hurl concrete at window, steal 3 bikes

Thieves used a rather unorthodox manner to take three bicycles about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

"Someone tossed a chunk of concrete that weighed 30 pounds and was the size of a basketball through the window on Sunday to steal the bicycles," said Kevin Dolan, manager of the Race Pace bicycle shop at Cranberry Square. "Whoever took the bikes must have been in here during the week and picked out the ones they wanted, because they walked past 15 other bikes," he said.

Mr. Dolan described the stolen bikes as: a Trek 6000 mountain bike with an 18-inch frame and 26-inch wheels with black and orange decals, worth $650; a Trek 950 mountain bike with a 16 1/2 -inch frame and 26-inch wheels, painted dark green valued at $659; and a purple Specialized Rockhopper Sport bike with a 16 1/2 -inch frame and 26-inch wheels worth $539.

Mr. Dolan said the thieves carried the bicycles out through the 50- by-65-inch double pane window, broken by the piece of concrete.

The owner of the store, Alexander O'Briecht of Coon Club Road, told police that the value of the bikes, the broken window, plus damage inside totaled $2,327.
