NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS

November 22, 1992

In Sunday's Howard section, an incorrect phone number was listed for Fish, a non-profit organization. The correct number is 377-1827.

The Baltimore Sun regrets the errors.

Name: Carroll Kitzmiller, a 31-year resident of Dayton.

Activities/Hobbies: Mrs. Kitzmiller works for the Election Board six months every other year and loves gardening. She is cultivating a water garden with plants and many goldfish. She also enjoys aerobics and sewing.

Organization's comments: Mrs. Kitzmiller volunteers for Fish, a non-profit organization that has been in the county for 18 years. Fish is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week answering service for people in need. Mrs. Kitzmiller has worked with Fish for the past 17 years.

FOR THE RECORD - CORRECTION

Her responsibilities include coordinating volunteers, helping to solve clients' and volunteers' problems and completing paperwork on clients.

"She has a great memory, and names mean something to her after a long time," said Joan Chiarenza, steering committee chairwoman. "She is a kind of catalog for us."

Mrs. Kitzmiller is also a member of the steering committee.

She says the name, Fish, is taken from the worldwide practice of placing a fish symbol in windows to signify that help is available. Fish has 155 volunteers, about 40 of whom are active each month.

To donate food or money, call 730-5480. If you are in need, call Fish at 889-0200.

BVolunteer's Comments: "I believe in what I do. There are a lot of people in need," says Mrs. Kitzmiller.

"We depend solely on donations of food and money to help people. We serve about 18,000 meals in a year. I believe in volunteering, you are sharing your life with people."

About Mrs. Kitzmiller: She is married to Francis and the mother of four children, who she says participated in Fish as they were growing up, by shopping and preparing lunches for those in need. She also has five grandchildren.

To make a nomination or receive a nomination form, call Jill L. Kubatko at 418-8013 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Nominations may be faxed to the office at 418-8016.
