Red Cross seeking volunteers to help at blood donor center WEST COLUMBIA

The Howard County District of the American Red Cross is seeking volunteers, 14 and older, to help out at the blood donor center at 10 Corporate Drive, near Columbia Mall. Center director Linda Frazier says that volunteers are needed to help with registration, work in the canteen, and for labeling and packaging.

For non-students, the hours are Monday through Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Student volunteers work shifts between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. and on Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Harper's Choice Middle School will be the site of the 10th Pre-Holiday Gospel Concert and Dinner sponsored by Brown's Chapel United Methodist Church.

The gala event will be held Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature performances by the Brown's Chapel Men's Choir; the Campbellaires, from Silver Spring; Versatile, from Frederick; local favorites, Two Plus One; The Travelers, from Baltimore; and soloists Donna Nix, Eric Dominic and Louis Williams.

Tickets are $15 for adults; $8 for children 5 to 12; $7 for children under 5. Tickets may be purchased by calling 531-3106, 531-5829 or 730-1804.


This will be the fifth year the volunteer auxiliary of the Howard County General Hospital has sponsored the annual holiday Garden of Lights. This year's effort will raise funds for the hospital's oncology services.

Individuals, groups and businesses can buy lights to help light the garden around the hospital.

Each light costs $5; each shrub costs $100; and each tree costs $300. A lighting ceremony will be held on Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. For additional information, call 740-7980.


"What Do You Say To An Empty Room?" That is the question to be answered during a presentation from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. today at Linden Hall in Dorsey's Search Village Center. Gallery 44 will offer redecorating ideas on how to convert rooms to today's look.

Refreshments will also be served.

The Wilde Lake Community Association will hold its annual "Breakfast With Santa" and "Children's Secret Shop" on Dec. 5. Children will be served breakfast by Santa's helpers while waiting for a private audience with Santa.

There will be two breakfast seatings, the first at 8:30 a.m., and the second at 10:30 a.m. You can also have your child's picture taken with Santa.

The Children's Secret Shop will be open between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Gift prices range from 50 cents and $5. The children will be able to browse and purchase gifts, and have their gifts wrapped free.

There will also be an Adult Secret Shop for parents this year.

Tickets must be purchased in advance at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The cost is $3 per person.

Because space is limited to 100 per seating, there is no pre-registration and no phone reservations will be accepted.

For aspiring models and actresses, a Model/Actress Workshop is scheduled for Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Linden Hall in Dorsey's Search Village Center. Columbia actress Traci Wolfe, who appeared in all three "Lethal Weapon" movies, will be the instructor.

To participate, you must register at Linden Hall no later than Friday. The cost is $65.
