Edgewater boy shoots friend, 13, accidentally ANNAPOLIS/SOUTH COUNTY -- Davidsonville * Edgewater * Shady Side * Deale

November 17, 1992

A 13-year-old Edgewater boy was in critical condition last night at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center after a friend accidentally shot him in the side with a sawed-off shotgun, police said.

Police said the boy was visiting a friend in the 1600 block of Rockhold Road in Edgewater when the friend went into a bedroom and returned with the shotgun.

The friend, 14, fired the weapon as he was attempting to switch its safety on. The blast struck the 13-year-old, who was kneeling down and petting the family dog.

When officers arrived, they found the victim lying on the front porch, bleeding from his left side. He was flown by helicopter to Shock Trauma.

Police said the shooting was accidental and that they will not charge the juvenile.

However, they said they have charged the owner of the shotgun, Albert J. Byers, 18, of the 1600 block of Rockhold Road, with possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

The charge is a misdemeanor punishable by five years in prison, a $5,000 fine or both.
