There is so much happening this week in central Carroll communities that I suggest lots of careful planning to make the most of it.

Check out the following list of activities and pick a winner!

If fine art is your thing, don't miss the art show and auction at 7 p.m. Thursday in the College Conference Center at Westminster's Comfort Inn.

A variety of original oils and prints from the Heisman Fine Arts Galleries in Virginia and Pennsylvania will be on display. Bids will be accepted on artwork.

Proceeds from the event will benefit programs offered by the Carroll County Youth Services Bureau.

"We have three schools in the county that are presently unserved by the Youth Services Bureau," said Tina Rodgers Brown, resource development coordinator. "We want to expand our services to include these three schools, and eventually provide counseling services to preschool-age children and their families."

Refreshments will be served and tickets will be available at the door. Information: 848-2500.

The holiday season, with its emphasis on family and sharing, can sometimes be overwhelming for those suffering from the loss of a loved one.

Thursday, the Carroll Hospice is sponsoring "Beating the Holiday Blues," a workshop for individuals who may be recently divorced, separated or have experienced the death of someone close.

Susan Hannon, director of bereavement services, said, "What we are planning for the first part of the evening will be a discussion of strategies and coping skills on how to beat the blues and get through the holiday season."

The second part of the evening will include refreshments and time for individuals to talk with one another and socialize.

The workshop will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster United Methodist Church, Main and Center streets. Admission is free.

Early Christmas shoppers take note.

The annual Christmas in the Country Bazaar at Sandymount United Methodist Church, Finksburg, will be held Saturday.

Beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing through 4 p.m., 20 vendors will be selling wood crafts, quilts, ceramics, pillows, homemade toys, wreaths and Christmas decorations in the church's Fellowship Hall.

Lunch will be available.

All proceeds from the bazaar will benefit missions supported by the church.

Bizarre? No, just yet another bazaar.

Known as "Christmas in the Country," the ninth annual event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Pleasant Valley fire hall.

The bazaar, sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary, will feature some 40 vendors selling a wide variety of wares and goodies.

All proceeds from the event go to benefit the Pleasant Valley Community Fire Company
