Brooklyn Park man charged in stabbing

A 24-year-old Brooklyn Park man has been charged with stabbing a man in a scuffle during an alleged drug deal that went sour, police said.

Roy Dion Kauffin, of the 900 block of Victory Lane, was charged Friday night with assault with intent to murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said the victim, David Haines, 36, of the 200 block of Southerly Ave., was at Mr. Kauffin's apartment shortly before midnight buying what he thought was crack cocaine.

After discovering the substance was not cocaine, police said, Mr. Haines asked for a refund.

The suspect flashed a knife and chased Mr. Haines outside, where he caught him and stabbed him twice, police said.

Mr. Haines was able to get away and call police, who arrested the man and a juvenile at the scene of the attack. Officers said they found a buck knife with what appeared to be dried blood on the blade in the suspect's right rear pants pocket.

Mr. Haines was taken by ambulance to Harbor Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition on Saturday.
