Name: Sanchitha Jayaram, 17, of Ellicott City.

School: Senior, Centennial High.

Honored for: Being a vocal music finalist in the Maryland Distinguished Scholars program this year. She sang a classical and a romantic piece before a three-judge panel. She also won first place in the mid-Atlantic region of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competitions. Last year, she played an integral role in "Prom Promise," in which 92 percent of Centennial High School students pledged not to drink alcohol on Prom Night. Last summer, she traveled to Fribourg, Switzerland, as a cultural exchange student.

Sanchitha's comments: "Singing is a passion. For me, it's DTC satisfying a richly physical desire."

Goals: Sanchitha wants to attend a university that offers a good academic and fine arts program where she can seek a double major.
