Vito Stellino's picks

November 15, 1992

A couple of fans in Charlotte are getting downright restless about the NFL's lack of expansion.

James Laughlin and Ms. Bjorg Wold wrote the U.S. attorney general, William Barr, and U.S. attorneys in New York and western Carolina charging the NFL is in "substantial violation of one or more statutes of the new Racketeer Influential Corrupt Organization (RICO) act" for refusing to expand after starting the process.

They describe the owners as "the largest collection of arrogant white male out-of-touch, power-hungry, money-grubbing, mean-spirited, elitist millionaire sports moguls in the world."

Well, well, they sound upset. I guess these poor souls actually believed the NFL was going to expand in the first place. They probably stand in front of their chimney on Dec. 25 waiting for a jolly man in a red suit to come down.

VITO'S PICK .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. THE LINE

Chiefs 6, Redskins 3 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Chiefs by 1 1/2

Hail to the Redskins haters. The Redskins-Seahawks game was beaten by the Bills-Steelers in the Baltimore TV ratings even though the Redskins usually prevail here on TV.

Vikings 21, Oilers 14 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. . . Vikings by 5 1/2

Jack Pardee may be proving that Leo Durocher's nice-guy line was right.

Cowboys 38, Rams 14 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Cowboys by 13

I got a letter from a woman who complained about my pick of the Eagles over the Cowboys. I think I'll send her a copy of the centerfold from the Cowboys' weekly newspaper and ask her if she really wants to root for a sexist organization.

Eagles 27, Packers 13 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Eagles by 8

L What does Rich Kotite do if Randall Cunningham plays poorly?

Steelers 31, Lions 17 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Steelers by 9 1/2

C7 Barry Sanders should sue the Lions for non-support.

Jets 21, Bengals 20 ... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. . Jets by 6 1/2

Boomer Esiason says he'd like to join a team that is only a quarterback away from the Super Bowl. How about the Redskins?

Cardinals 21, Falcons 14 ... .. .. .. .. .. .. ... 14 Falcons by 3

G; Deion Sanders hasn't exactly turned the Falcons around.

Chargers 27, Browns 20 .. ... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Browns by 1 1/2

Bobby Ross found out last week you can't block Derrick Thomas with one lineman.

Colts 21, Patriots 14 . ... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Colts by 6 1/2

Even the oddsmakers are confused about this one. The Colts haven't scored a point in two weeks and the Patriots are the Patriots and are starting Scott Zolak. The oddsmakers threw up their arms and took it off the board early in the week before making the Colts 6 1/2 -point favorites.

49ers 23, Saints 14 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 49ers by 7

Joe Montana still gets more attention for throwing on the sidelines than Steve Young does for throwing touchdown passes.

Raiders 27, Seahawks 10 . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Raiders by 12 1/2

The Raiders bench Todd Marinovich again this week. For Seattle?

Bears 26, Bucs 10 .. .. . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Bears by 3 1/2

Mike Ditka benches four players this week, including Neal Anderson. Maybe he should suit up himself.

Broncos 31, Giants 17 . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Broncos by 3 1/2

It's a shame LT's Achilles' tendon couldn't have lasted the rest of the season.

Bills 21, Dolphins 17 . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Bills by 1

I got a call from an irate Dolphins fan telling me they're a different team after I picked the Bills to beat them the first time. This pick will make his day if the Dolphins win again.

Best bets: Raiders, Bills, Steelers and 49ers.

Last week's record: 11-3. Against spread: 9-5. Best bets: 3-1.

Season record: 83-43. Against spread: 58-64-4. Best bets: 14-23-3.
