The South Carroll field hockey team continued to weave a winning path through the state 3A championship tournament yesterday.

The third-seeded Cavaliers dominated second seed Kenwood with a 6-1 victory in the semifinals in a light rain on the upper field at Goucher College.

South Carroll (8-2-5) took 22 shots to two for Kenwood and had 11 penalty corners to one for the Bluebirds.

"This is not surprising," said first-year Kenwood coach Karen Spice, who guided the Bluebirds (7-2-2) to their first state final-four field hockey appearance. "We're a very young team, and we're just happy to be here. It was a real challenge, but we lost to a great team."

Alicia Sievert led South Carroll with three goals and one assist, and Patti Duffy had two goals. Tracie DiDio had one goal and one assist, including the first goal 2:36 into the game.

The defending 3A champion Cavaliers have rolled up a 10-1 scoring margin against three opponents in the tournament.

Meanwhile, on the lower field, top seed Bethesda Chevy Chase (13-1) raced to a 6-0 win over fourth seed Calvert (7-5-1).

Erica Dowling and Sara Waslick scored two goals each for BCC to set up a rematch of last year's state 3A championship game. South Carroll defeated Bethesda Chevy Chase, 1-0, last year. The winning goal by the Cavaliers was the only goal scored against BCC all season.
