Allegany sweeps N. Carroll in regional opening round Volleyball

North Carroll had no answers last night for Giorgia Scalera, a high-leaping, big-spiking exchange student from Italy.

Scalera sent one rocket shot after another across the net for third-seeded Allegany, as the Campers swept the second-seeded Panthers, 15-10, 15-12, 15-11, in a state 2A, Region I opening-round volleyball match at North Carroll.

Scalera, who has been playing volleyball nine years, was also the quickest player on the floor and had the best all-around skills.

She used her quickness to frustrate the Panthers (11-5) all night , making some incredible returns of balls off the net and blocking several shots.

A play that was typical of the match came in the third game with Allegany leading, 11-10, and North Carroll's Meghan Moore serving for a tie and a good opportunity to force a fourth game in the best-of-five match.

On the key play, Scalera wound up going against North Carroll's big spiker and top player, Joy Huber, at the net.

Scalera and Huber went high in the air and the Allegany star slammed the ball hard right at Huber.

In most cases this season, Huber came out best on those kind of situations, but Scalera sent the ball so quickly that Huber couldn't block it.

The ball went off Huber's hands out of bounds, and Allegany took over the serve to run off four of the last five points.

"I love being in the United States," said Scalera. "I have more time to practice volleyball. Over there, I have to spend five to six hours a day on schoolwork."

Panthers coach Linda Richards said there was nothing she could do to turn the match around in favor of her team no matter what she said.

"We had a bad practice Monday night, and it continued over into the match. We didn't get the ball to the setter and we didn't get that many hits," said Richards. "We also had some serving problems."

The quicker Campers (14-2) were able to return many of the best shots by North Carroll, shots that would have gone for points in the regular season for North Carroll.

"They had some unbelievable gets," said Richards.
