Columbia man, 26, critically injured in four-vehicle accident

A 26-year-old Columbia man was critically injured early yesterday when his car veered off Route 32, struck a guardrail and collided with two other vehicles, Howard County police said.

Christopher Allen McDonald, of the 8900 block of Early April Way, was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said Mr. McDonald was westbound on Route 32 about 5:45 a.m. when his 1986 Nissan Pulsar ran off the Middle Patuxent River Bridge near Cedar Lane and struck the guardrail.

The Nissan traveled back across two westbound lanes and into the eastbound lanes, where it struck a 1986 Ford Bronco driven by Larry Bruce Specht, 45, of the 12000 block of Hall Shop Road in Clarksville, police said. Mr. Specht was not injured, police said.

The McDonald car then slammed into an eastbound 1982 Ford F150 pickup truck, driven by George Stephen Roscoe, 51, of the 14500 block of MacClintock Drive in Glenwood, police said. He received minor injuries, but refused treatment at the scene, police said.

An eastbound 1987 Volvo, driven by James Alan Moore, 33, of the 6400 block of Tamarack Circle in Sykesville, rear-ended the Bronco, police said. Mr. Moore was uninjured, police said.

The accident, which closed the road for at least two hours during rush hour, is still under investigation. No charges have been filed, police said.
