Essex CC falls in championship game

The Community College of Allegheny County (Pa.) beat host Essex Community College, 5-3, in a shootout yesterday to win its first NJCAA Region XX championship.

Allegheny scored on a penalty kick in regulation, which ended in a 1-1 tie. It scored on another penalty kick in overtime, which closed in a 2-2 deadlock, and won the title in the shootout.

Allegheny (18-1-2), ranked 14th nationally, advances to the national tournament, that starts on Nov. 19 at Mercer County Community College in New Jersey. Essex, ranked 18th nationally, finishes at 14-4-1.

It was the second win over Essex this year for Allegheny, which hadn't beaten Essex in 25 years before this season.

The 3-hour, 30-minute marathon stretched through the regulation 90 minutes plus two mandatory 15-minute overtime periods, two 15-minute sudden-death overtime periods and the shootout. The game was rough and physical with several near fights and eight yellow cards handed out.

In the shootout, John Blatz, Matt Cohen and Brendan Lang made their shots for Allegheny while Dan Santoro, Joe Bailey and Bradley Crossley converted their penalty kicks for Essex. Bill Vasy then hit his kick for Allegheny for a 4-3 lead.
