The strategy of Kenwood coach Karen Spicer may have been unorthodox in yesterday's game against Franklin, but it did the trick.

With her team stalled in a scoreless tie at the end of regulation, Spicer inserted a defensive lineup, giving her offense a much-needed rest.

The result -- the Bluebirds' Danielle Baker scored the winning goal 4:01 into the second overtime, and Kenwood walked away with a 1-0 victory and the Class 3A, Region II championship.

"I wanted my attackers to rest, and I thought my defense could hold them off," said Spicer, who inserted her regular lineup to start the second overtime. "We've won games with our defense all year, not the offense. Our defense is just really tough."

The win advances the second-seeded Bluebirds (7-1-2) into Wednesday's Class 3A state semifinal atGoucher College against third-seeded South Carroll, a 3-0 winner yesterday over Thomas Johnson.

Franklin dominated, controlling the ball on offense and keeping it in Kenwood's end for most of the game. The Indians took 20 penalty corners to the Bluebirds' 6, and outshot them, 2-0, in the first overtime.
