Fallston's field hockey team knew its only chance to win the regional title was to stop Rising Sun scoring star Paula Beaudette.

In the first half of yesterday's Class 2A, Region II final at Fallston, Jenny Haslbeck and Susan Mackley double-teamed Beaudette in the circle and didn't allow her a shot. In the second half, Beaudette broke free only once, but that was enough.

The senior forward scored her 27th goal of the season to beat the No. 4 Cougars, 1-0.

It was the Cougars' second straight loss to Rising Sun (11-3) in the regional finals.

Fallston (10-2) outshot Rising Sun, 9-3, but Tigers goalkeeper Karen Jackson was excellent. Her four saves earned her an 11th shutout.

"She hasn't had a lot of challenges this year, because our defense has kept them out," said Rising Sun coach Linda Saubier. "But Fallston played a real tough game."

With 9:32 left in the second half, Beaudette got the ball at midfield and took off. She dodged several defenders, stepped into the circle and blasted a shot into the cage past Fallston goalkeeper Jenny Smith.
