McDaniel leads Key in OT, 2-1

Francis Scott Key sophomore Jen McDaniel scored her second goal of the game 31 seconds into the second sudden-death overtime period to give the top-seeded Eagles a 2-1 win over Poolesville and their eighth consecutive Class 1A, Region I field hockey championship yesterday.

McDaniel scored the game-winner by lunging for a loose ball along the right side of the Poolesville cage.

"I was just praying I would be able to reach it," McDaniel said.

"I closed my eyes and heard a bang and hoped it went in."

The Eagles (6-6-2) make their eighth straight state playoff appearanced play Monday afternoon at 3 against Region IV champ Pocomoke, at Goucher College.

Poolesville opened the scoring at the 15:50 mark of the first half when Nancy Anett scored off a rebound. But McDaniel scored her first career goal less than two minutes into the second half off a penalty corner to even the score.
