Westminster aiming to cut South Carroll down to size in finale

South Carroll vs. Westminster.

It's Carroll County's version of City vs. Poly, or Army vs. Navy.

The winner gets bragging rights for a year.

On the surface, South Carroll (5-4) appears to be too strong for Westminster (2-7) in tonight's 7:30, season-ending football game Westminster.

If the Owls pull off an upset, though, they will be county champions with a 3-0 record, and South Carroll would fall to 2-1.

Westminster coach Jeff Oeming said his team won't be intimidated by South Carroll's huge offensive line, which averages 238 pounds, and 237-pound running back Mike Dodd (213 rushes,1,104 yards and 12 touchdowns in nine games).

"There are ways to negate size," said Oeming. "We'll just have to come up with the right schemes to do it. I don't see how people can say we're a big underdog in this game. If you look at how we each played against Liberty, that should tell you something."

South Carroll scored a touchdown late to nail down a 14-0 victory over Liberty early in the season. Westminster scored 14 points in the first quarter against the Lions on the way to a 30-15 win two weeks ago.

The major task for the smaller Owls will be stopping the hard-running Dodd.

Westminster has some good athletes on defense, including defensive end Gabe Zepp, who also starts at running back, and free safety Brad Gibson, who also plays quarterback. But Zepp (165 pounds) and Gibson (180 pounds) don't have the size to match up with the likes of Dodd.

And the Westminster defensive line obviously is overmatched physically by the likes of Cavaliers offensive linemen Jamie Waltersdorff (6-5, 280), Mike Johnson (6-1, 255), Mike Arterburn (5-7, 220), Chris Nave (5-11, 220) and Paul Weinhardt (5-11, 215).

If the Owls are to have a chance, they have to hope for an offensive shootout.

Zepp has been putting up some impressive numbers, rushing for 143 yards and two touchdowns last week in a superb performance against powerful Linganore.

L The Owls played well against Linganore before losing, 33-18.

For the season, Zepp has rushed for 572 yards and six touchdowns and Gibson has 41 completions in 97 attempts for 650 yards and seven touchdowns.
