Simmons, Beall triumph in 1A, III Cross country

WORTON -- Joppatowne's Bobby Simmons and Fallston's Monica Beall are used to running the hills in Harford County.

But yesterday, the two adjusted to the flat and muddy 3-mile course at Kent County High School and placed first in the Class 1A, Region III cross country championships.

The Fallston girls (15 points) placed five runners in the top 10 as the Cougars defended their regional team title.

The Easton boys (38 points) placed three runners in the top 10 to edge Joppatowne (39).

Simmons, one of three Mariners in the top 10, ran his best time of the season, 15 minutes, 38 seconds. Beall, who sat out last season with an ankle injury, finished in 20:03.

Class 2A, Region IV

North Harford's Lucy Howard took first place in 20:19 to defend her Class 2A, Region IV cross country title at Kent County High.

Howard was followed by teammate Joy Corson (21:02).

Wicomico won the girls' team title with 34 points followed by James M. Bennett with 43. Both teams will advance to the states.

Clayton Nichols, from Stephen Decatur in Worcester County, won the boys' race in 15:33.

Edgewood's Jamie Fortier (17:24, eighth), James Morrison (17:44, 10th) and Mike Woodbury (18:16, 13th), along with North Harford's Brian Hagan (18:17, 14th) and Donna Winkler (23:45, 13th), all qualified for the states.
