J. Carroll wins Harford County title Boys volleyball

November 06, 1992

John Carroll, which has not finished worse than second in the past six years, claimed its third Harford County boys volleyball title in that span yesterday, beating C. Milton Wright, 15-5, 15-8.

This was a meeting of unbeatens at C. Milton Wright, with each side coming in at 7-0. The home team never got its normally consistent game in gear.

"We knew what we had to do," said John Carroll's Rick Abercrombie, a 6-foot-5 senior and a dominant middle hitter. "We needed to block and get our outside attack going."

Abercrombie and junior Chris Babiak took care of the middle, and senior John Schab and juniors Jeff Pryor and Dan Gradishar handled the outside attack.

"We were worried about our defense, but we went on the floor for a lot of balls," said senior setter Bill Philkin.

Losing coach Bill Lang said: "I don't think they [John Carroll] were as dominating as we had seen them in the past, but they played a good, steady game. Going in, I thought we had a good chance, but we played flat."
