Ledda, Franklin take Scholarship 5K

Liberty High student Joe Ledda and Western Maryland College senior Shannon Franklin were the winners in the Scholarship 5K run Oct. 24 at the Carroll County Farm Museum.

Ledda, 15, crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 37 seconds, shortly before Dave Ramsey, who finished in 17:43. Justin Combs of Liberty was third in 17:47, followed by South Carroll's Matt Crill in 17:56.

The top masters runner (age 40-over) of the 47 male finishers was Larry Green in 19:09.

Franklin, a North Carroll High grad, won the women's race in 24:06, with Lluda Galinaitis second in 25:01 and Dawn Hargett third in 28:28.

Pat Gugliotta was the top masters runner in 32:42.

The event, co-sponsored by the Westminster Road Runners and the Carroll County Life Underwriters, raised money for college scholarships for county high school seniors.

County football

* Westminster's B team maintained its share of first place in Division I by rallying to top Sykesville, 18-12.

The Raiders led 12-6 at halftime on a 60-yard run and 60-yard kickoff return by Calvin Stacey.

But Westminster quarterback Chad Hayes tied it in the third quarter with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Desmond Esteves.

The Lions then scored the winning touchdown with 4 minutes remaining when Jamie Lang caught a Sykesville punt and lateraled to Esteves, who ran 45 yards to score.

Westminster's first score came when its punt bounced off a Sykesville receiver. Mike Rambo caught it in the air and ran 60 yards into the end zone.

Eddie Dill, filling in at middle linebacker, was excellent on defense for Westminster. Sykesville linebacker Matt Deuchler and end Greg Jones also played strong defense.

* Westminster's C team kept its Division I top slot with a 6-0 win over Sykesville.

Collin Angell passed 47 yards to Brendan McDaniel for the only touchdown, with 1:30 left in the game.

Green Terrors linebacker Rafe Bridges stifled Sykesville's only big threat when he intercepted a pass inside the Westminster 10 near halftime. Linebacker Roy Howe and tackle Shawn Myrick had eight tackles each for Westminster.

Sykesville, which turned the ball over eight times, was led defensively by Nick Crockett and Sean Baker.

* The Raiders' A team stayed undefeated with a 29-0 win over Westminster. Dan Alberter, Ryan Pagels, Justin Barnowski and Joel Denning scored touchdowns for the 7-0 Raiders.

Sykesville tackles Herb Switzer and Grant Lampert played well on defense, with nine and seven tackles, respectively.

North Carroll soccer

* Under-10 -- Dr. Kenney's blanked Uniform Graphix, 5-0. Josh Miller had three goals, and Eric Pannell and Chris Blankenship had one each. Kenney's 10-0 record is most among the county's youth soccer teams.

* Lamotte Development edged North Carroll Physical Therapy, 1-0, on a goal by Jeff Yingling, and Manchester Pharmacy and Main Street Photographic played to a scoreless tie.

* Under-12 -- Bachman Valley Inn and Farmers-Merchants Bank played to a 1-1 tie. Meredith Gill scored for Bachman Valley and Justin Prajner for Farmers-Merchants.

* Undefeated Westminster Bank and winless Funtimes Partyland played to a scoreless tie.

* Under-14 -- In a second-round playoff, Dean's Restaurant topped Ray Bosley Construction, 5-1, behind two goals by Josh Bowie and one each by Josh Potts, Nick Price and Chris Lewis. Tiffany Dressel scored for Bosley.

County girls soccer

* Under-10 -- The North Carroll Panthers broke a 2-2 tie midway in the second half and went on to top South Carroll, 5-2. Katie Crest led the winners with three goals; Jessica Bonito and Lacy Hentz added scores. Brooke Collins, Amanda Collins, Amy Bromwell and Bonito had assists.

* Under-12 -- Jessie Bradford scored two goals and Teresa Barnes one to lead the North Carroll Tornados to a 3-1 win over Westminster.

* South Carroll topped Charles Carroll, 5-1. Allison Pohlit, Lindsay Gover, Courtney McCray, Andrea Podobnik and Pun Chittchang scored goals for the winners, and Gover, Chittchang, Brenda Hovanec, Chrissy Murphy and Kelly Knutson had assists.

* Under-14-B -- South Carroll beat Sacred Heart, 4-0, on goals by Lea Vizzini and Nora Koch plus two others that scored off Sacred Heart players. Mandy Goad, Stacy Smith and Christy Miller had assists.

Metro girls soccer

* Freedom United kept its hold on first place in the league's under-12 division with a 1-0 shutout of Lutherville-Timonium. Brandy Ault scored for Freedom (7-0).

Keeper Mandy Hughes recorded her fourth shutout of the season for Freedom, and stopper Stephanie Wilson helped preserve that shutout with her strong defense against the Baltimore County team's top scorer.

County boys soccer

* Under-10-A -- Deer Park topped North Carroll, 3-1, behind two goals by Josh Ches and one by Daniel Levin. Fullback Michael Garzon played well defensively for Deer Park, and forward Matt Peach turned in a strong offensive effort.

* Under-12-B -- Goals by Paul Tyng and Mike McCurry powered Deer Park to a 2-0 win over Charles Carroll.

* Under 14-A -- The Freedom Flyers won twice, topping Reisterstown, 1-0, and Linganore, 4-2.

James Smyrnioudis scored against Reisterstown. Fullback Ryan

Renehan and keeper Zack Dietrich played strong defense.

Tim Shifflett scored twice against Linganore, and Smyrnioudis and Kyle Swinton once each.

* The North Carroll Strikers played to 2-2 ties against Westminster and Mount Airy. Tony Reightler and Dave Rongioni scored in each game for the Strikers.

Nathan Hendrickson and Aaron Dorsey tallied for Mount Airy.
