Violent crime in Howard County fell 11 percent in the first nine months of this year, while vandalism and similar crimes rose nearly 5 percent, according to statistics released by the Howard County Police Department.

"There's really no explanation" for the drop in violent crime, said Sgt. Gary L. Gardner, a county police spokesman. "It could [go] up in the last quarter."

Violent crime includes homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Sergeant Gardner said that year-end statistics would provide a more complete picture.

Total crime has increased 3.9 percent from 14,195 crimes reported during the first nine months of 1991, to 14,424 during the same period this year.

EIn the first six months of this year, total crime rose 5 percent, and violent crime fell 4 percent.

Assaults declined 10.5 percent, the nine-month statistics showed.

"Part II" crimes -- vandalism, fraud, drug offenses and disorderly conduct -- rose 4.9 percent in the first nine months this year, according to the statistics. Property crimes -- burglary, theft and auto theft -- rose 2 percent though auto thefts as a separate category dropped 13.1 percent.

The comparison showed rapes were up 21.7 percent from 23 to 28; non-vehicle theft up 4.8 percent from 3,932 to 4,120; and burglary up 5.5 percent from 1,079 to 1,138.

During the same period, homicides decreased 37.5 percent from eight to five. The county's record for homicides is nine, in 1989.

Robberies were down 16.5 percent from 103 to 86.
