Two real estate law specialists have left the Baltimore office of McGuire, Woods, Battle & Boothe to start their own firm in Columbia.

Alvin C. Monshower Jr., a partner at McGuire Woods, and Richard L. Miller, an associate with the firm, said yesterday their new firm, Monshower & Miller, will specialize in the legal representation of real estate brokers and agents, primarily in residential real estate.

Mr. Monshower is the former executive vice president of the Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors and remains general legal counsel to the Maryland Association of Realtors, as well as six local boards and associations of Realtors. Mr. Miller has a general real estate specialty.

"This was a very amicable change. This was not an 'L.A. Law' episode," said Mr. Monshower.

"We had two good lawyers and now we're without two good lawyers," said R. Dennis McArver, the partner in charge of the Baltimore office of McGuire Woods. The Richmond-based firm, which has 360 lawyers, entered the Baltimore market last year with the takeover of Cable, McDaniel, Bowie & Bond.

Mr. McArver said that his firm would refer work to the new firm and vice versa.
