ANNAPOLIS -- Terry Hutchinson of Traverse City, Mich., won Race 2 of the J/24 World Championships sailed here yesterday, but Ken Read of Portsmouth, R.I., finished second and took a solid lead over the 82-boat field.

"A second is a keeper in this sport and we'll take it," said Read, who won Race 1 on Sunday.

Despite winning Race 2, Hutchinson is in 40th place after an early start in Race 1 gained him 82 points.

"In Race 1 we actually crossed the finish line third and did sail pretty well," Hutchinson said yesterday. "And today's race was a little easier because we were out in the lead pretty early and we didn't have to deal with a lot of other boats.

"We just had to sail a conservative race and stay ahead of the second- and third-place boats."

Toward the end of Race 2, however, Read began to challenge, as he had the day before against Jim Brady of Annapolis.

"He started grinding us down a little and rounded the last leeward mark into the last beat basically tied," Hutchinson said. "So it was a matter of sailing pretty fast and having pretty good tactics."

At the last weather mark, Hutchinson said, a bad spinnaker set had slowed his boat, and Read rounded with good speed and stole the wind.

Read said that perhaps his crew had opportunities to force an error by Hutchinson, but "the last thing we wanted to do was get in a foul situation."

Brady, who finished second in Race 1, finished 40th yesterday and stands in 13th place. However, each skipper may throw out one race in this event -- and at this point there is no doubt which races Hutchinson and Brady would eliminate.

Racing conditions on the eight-mile Olympic triangle course were wet and cold with an easterly breeze at 8 to 13 knots. Racing continues daily through Friday.
