Steady rain over the past few days spoiled the opening of postseason play yesterday as five county field hockey and three girls soccer matches were postponed.

Three field hockey matches are rescheduled for today.

In Class 4A, Region II action, defending state champ and top region seed Westminster (10-2) will host fourth-seeded Gaithersburg at 3 p.m.

Last year, the Owls started their journey to the state title with a 3-0 win over Gaithersburg in region semifinal play.

ELiberty (6-3-3), fourth-seeded in Class 2A, Region II, will travel to top-seeded Glenelg at 3, while top-seeded Francis Scott Key (4-6-2), defending Class 1A, Region I champs, will play fourth-seeded Wilde Lake at 2 p.m.

These two contests also are rematches of semifinal-round games from last season.

The Lions came into last year's game against Glenelg as the No. 2 seed and came away with a 2-1 win in Eldersburg. The Eagles had to rally from an early 1-0 deficit against Wilde Lake in 1991 before coming away with a 3-1 win.

The two other field hockey matches are slated for 3 p.m. tomorrow.

South Carroll (5-2-5) is seeded second in Class 3A, Region III and will play host to third-seeded Linganore. In two regular-season .. meetings, the Cavaliers defeated Linganore, 2-1, at home, before settling for a scoreless tie later at Linganore.

In Class 2A, Region I semifinal action, North Carroll (7-3-2) comes in seeded second and will play host to third-seeded Middletown.

The three postponed girls soccer matches will take place tomorrow.

In Class 1A/2A, Region II semifinal-round play, North Carroll (7-3-2) comes in as the top seed and will host fourth-seeded Hereford at 7 p.m.

South Carroll (10-1-1) is the second seed in Class 3A/4A, Region IV and will host third-seeded Western at 7.

Liberty (5-4-2) will be on the road as the third seed in Class 1A-2A, Region III. They will be at second-seeded Towson.

Two boys soccer matches also are regularly scheduled for tomorrow.

Francis Scott Key (5-6-1) is the fourth seed in Class 1A, Region II and will travel to top-seeded Poolesville at 7. Liberty (6-5-1), also seeded fourth in Class 2A, Region I, will be at top-seeded Middletown at 6.
