Route 140 Bob's Big Boy to close, reopen as Shoney's CENTRAL/Union Mills * Westminster * Sandymount * Finksburg

November 03, 1992

The Bob's Big Boy restaurant on Route 140 will close Tuesday night and reopen sometime in the future as a Shoney's restaurant, manager Mike Wingeart said yesterday.

The change-over is the result of Bethesda-based Marriott Corp. selling several of its Big Boy restaurants to Shoney's, Mr. Wingeart said.

Shoney's restaurants already exist in Central Maryland. They are family oriented restaurants similar to Big Boy and Denny's.

"The food will be different," Mr. Wingeart said. "It will be prepared from scratch from fresh ingredients. We use a lot of frozen products now [as Bob's]. So, all in all, I think it's a good change."

The restaurant will close just long enough for it to be remodeled and for its employees to be trained. Changes will include the installation of charcoal broilers in the kitchen, Mr. Wingeart said.

Mr. Wingeart said he will remain as manager, and other employees have all been offered the opportunity to continue working at the restaurant under its new ownership. He said he was not sure how long the restaurant would be closed, but said that employees may be given the opportunity to work at other area Shoney's restaurants until it reopens.
