License plate series ends with a snore: ZZZ

November 03, 1992|By Staff Report

All things must come to an end, and license plates are no exception.

The state Motor Vehicle Administration yesterday presented the last possible combination, ZZZ 999, in a license plate series that began six years ago to the Baltimore Museum of Industry.

MVA officials said they decided to donate the plate for future exhibit because of its historic value.

About 8 million combinations of three letters and three numbers exist in the series. It began in 1986 with NAA 001 to avoid overlap with the predecessor design, which began with AAB 001.

Maryland has plenty of plates left for its approximately 3.5 million registered vehicles, a spokeswoman said. For one thing, the numbers on expired plates continually become available.
