STANDOUT/VOLUNTEERS

November 01, 1992

Name: Katherine "Kitty" Raymont of Annapolis

Activities/hobbies: Originally from Huntington, N.Y., and a forme executive secretary with the American offices of the Olympus Camera Corp. in New York, she and her husband moved to the Annapolis area after their retirement in 1989 to be near their grandchildren. Mrs. Raymont and her husband are avid travelers. She also enjoys playing golf and swimming.

Mrs. Raymont, who joined the volunteer ranks shortly after moving to the area, wears two hats for the Anne Arundel Medical Center. She works one day a week for the AAMC Auxiliary Patient Services, which provides reading materials or just a friendly ear to patients.

She also devotes time to helping with administrative details, including new subscribers and the coordination of volunteers for Lifeline Systems Inc. This part of the hospital provides special support to people who live at home and are not fully ambulatory.

People in this program include mothers with small children, the disabled and seniors. They wear sensors that can be activated by a button in the event that they run into difficulty and are unable to reach a telephone. The sensor activates a signal that is heard by the program's field volunteers, who then attempt to contact the person in trouble or paramedics if there is no answer.

Organization's comments: Mary Ann Flynn, coordinator o Lifeline, said: "She is an excellent volunteer, very knowledgeable and an absolute pleasure to work with. Without her, I really don't know what Lifeline would do."

Volunteer's comments: "I've always been involved in some sor of volunteer work, so it was very enjoyable working with people. I feel that since I'm no longer working full time, it's a great way to get to know Annapolis and to meet people. Plus, the program really needed people, so I just jumped in with both hands. And I enjoy every minute of it."
