Men's softball

The Thumpers won the men's fall league's C Division softball title with a 13-1 record and then captured the overall championship by winning the postseason tournament last weekend. They clinched the crown by edging Lehigh, 13-12, Sunday evening at the Carroll County Sports Complex.

The Thumpers won their first three games and then blasted Lehigh, 15-4, Sunday in the final winners' bracket game. But Lehigh, which had finished second in the league's A Division in the regular season, was not through.

It came through the losers' bracket to face the Thumpers again.

In the teams' next meeting, Lehigh jumped ahead 5-1 after three innings and went on to a 6-4 win, forcing a final game.

In the fourth, with the score tied at 2, the Thumpers' Mike Medairy and Pat Myers began the heavy hitting; the teams combined for 21 runs in the next four innings.

The two hit back-to-back triples, with Myers' blow breaking the 2-2 tie. Tom Yox's bases-loaded triple later in the inning scored three runs to make it 6-2 Thumpers.

In the seventh, Wade Shifflet's two-run single sparked a five-run Thumpers' rally that gave them a 13-4 lead.

Mountain Valley football

The Francis Scott Key Junior Eagles varsity pulled a major upset Sunday when they edged first-place Damascus, 12-8.

The Eagles (1-6 entering the game) scored on two touchdown runs by Mitchell Plank. They then had a successful goal-line stand to hold off Damascus in the game's final moments.

Key's junior varsity fell to the undefeated Damascus JV, 37-28.

Jason Zinkand ran for 110 yards, caught two passes for 80, returned a kickoff 70 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Eagles.

Larry Nail scored the other Eagles' touchdown, on a 45-yard run in the second quarter.

The Gamber-Smallwood varsity also put up a tough struggle before falling to Frederick, 35-20.

Frederick jumped ahead, 14-0, before Chad Kerley's second-quarter run made it 14-6.

Kerley ran 45 yards for another score in the period, and Mike Swain's two-point conversion kick left Gamber trailing, 21-14, at halftime.

Frederick extended the lead to 35-14 before Kerley's 17-yard, fourth-quarter run closed out the scoring.

Frederick did all its scoring in the first half to blank Gamber, 19-0, in the JV game and the Frederick varsity shut out Gamber, 14-0.
