Everything is handmade, from jewelry to woodcrafts, ceramics to preserves, knitting, even child-size furniture at the Arts and Crafts Show sponsored by the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. The show runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Fire Hall, 1341 N. Main St., Hampstead.

"We want room so people can move, stop and look," says Hannah Stevens, an auxiliary ways and means committee member, "so no more than 56 vendors are allowed."

The auxiliary opens a small cafe during the show "where the big coffee pot is," so folks can sit and have a sandwich.

Like a giant fortune cookie, the yellow Jiffy Mart marquee at Main Street and Gill Avenue in Hampstead delivers weekly pearls of wisdom to passers-by.

Manager Sherry Reed, inspired by her employees, places a new phrase on each side of the sign Sunday night.

"We thought it'd be great on Monday morning to read something really off the wall," she said. "It would brighten your day."

Jiffy Mart, she says, usually has room for phrases, birthday announcements or non-profit group notices on its marquees at each of the chain's locations.

Said Mrs. Reed, "We're part of the community, here for the community. Birthday notes are part of that philosophy."

Some weeks, a phrase arises after a serious issue has touched an employee.

When they put up "Support your local undertaker, drink and drive," said Mrs. Reed, "it was to make people stop and think. We got a lot of comments about it."

At prom time, the store's marquee said, "Now take the pledge, you shouldn't hedge."

My office wall is pretty much wallpapered with quotes," Mrs. Reed said.

"People from other [Jiffy Mart] stores come here to get inspiration for their marquee."

"Christmas at the Church," the annual holiday bazaar at St. John's United Methodist Church, at Main and Gill in Hampstead will be held 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Got three friends and Saturday nights free?

You can join "Saturday Night Live" at Hampstead Bowling Center, 1625 N. Main. When you call Ginny at 374-6211 to register your four-person team, she'll tell you that no experience is necessary.

It's 9-pin no-tap, which means on the first ball, nine pins count as a strike.

The leagues bowl from Nov. 14 to early May.
