Allied-Signal Inc.

Earnings for this Morristown, N.J., automotive and aerospace company jumped to $140 million in the third quarter as a major restructuring showed results. Last October, the company laid off 14,000 workers, or 14 percent of its work force, closed 10 plants and sold eight business units.

Allied-Signal, which owns Bendix operations in Maryland, said it expects its earnings for the full year to exceed the high end of its previous forecast of $3.60 to $3.85 a share.

Last year's third-quarter income would have been $80 million, or 58 cents a share, excluding special charges of $661 million.
