SHA to widen part of Ritchie Highway

The State Highway Administration plans to widen a mile-long stretch of Ritchie Highway between Hammonds Lane and 11th Avenue to relieve congestion and improve safety.

The widening will add left-turn lanes at four traffic signals within that stretch, said Liz Ziemski, an SHA spokeswoman. In addition, the grading along the roadway and shoulder is to be improved.

"Clearly this area seems to be a prime candidate to be widened," Ms. Ziemski said. "Not that it's unsafe, but there have been some rear-end type accidents."

More than 31,000 cars travel the road every day, she said. In addition to relieving congestion, the improvements also should reduce the waiting time for motorists making left turns, she said.

The project, which engineers are currently designing, will not b advertised for bid until fall 1993. Construction would start in early 1994.
