CARROLL COUNTY DAMASCUS — Damascus rips S. Carroll, 36-6

DAMASCUS -- South Carroll fought to stay close at halftime despite several early mistakes. Damascus, however, threw the knockout punch in the second half.

Alister Pinckney rushed for 108 of his 114 yards and one touchdown in the second half, leading a strong running game that dominated the final two quarters as Damascus defeated South Carroll, 36-6, last night.

Damascus (7-1) scored three touchdowns in the second half. The Hornets made some blocking changes on their traps and belly plays that paid off. The Hornets rushed for 138 yards in the second half and controlled the clock.

"They were pretty basic [in the second half]," said South Carroll coach Gene Brown, whose team has lost three straight.

The strong running game took away any momentum South Carroll (4-4) had at halftime. Quarterback Ron Garrett had hit Jeremy Esworthy with a 5-yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds left in the half, which cut the Damascus lead to 15-6. Esworthy injured his shoulder on the previous play, but stayed in to catch the scoring toss.

"When we made the adjustments, it worked well," said Damascus coach Al Thomas.

The Hornets opened the second half with a 13-play, 78-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard Pinckney scoring run for a 22-6 lead. Pinckney ran for 50 yards on that drive alone.

Then, early in the fourth quarter, Pinckney broke a 56-yard run that set up Jody Trammell's 1-yard touchdown that gave Damascus a 29-6 lead. Pinckney had missed the previous two games with a hairline fracture of his foot.

A Damascus interception set up that drive. Matt Meiklejohn picked off a pass from Garrett and returned it to the Hornets' 37. Two plays later, Pinckney broke off his long run.

South Carroll had its best passing effort of the season. Garrett hit seven of 14 for 72 yards, and completed five on the Cavaliers' touchdown drive. Mike Dodd led the rushing attack with 81 yards on 19 carries.

Mistakes haunted South Carroll in the first half. The Cavaliers losttwo fumbles, and a punt and an extra-point try were blocked.

The first fumble came on the fourth play of the game. Garrett lost the snap and Damascus recovered. The Hornets then drove 55 yards on nine plays, capped by Brandt Childs' 2-yard quarterback sneak.

The snap was high for the extra-point kick, and holder Joey Dunn hit kicker Dean Turnbull for the two-point conversion with 6:15 left.

South Carroll then ran three plays and was forced to punt on a fourth-and-18 from its 20. Eric Bickle broke through and blocked Brian Yanick's kick. The ball rolled into the end zone, where Damascus' Steve Warren recovered for the touchdown. Turnbull's extra point made it 15-0 with 4:07 left in the quarter.

South Carroll lost another fumble in the second quarter, but Damascus gave it right back on the next play. The Cavaliers later drove 66 yards on 14 plays, capped by Esworthy's touchdown catch.
