DINING OUT THE CRITIC'S REPORT

AMERICAN CAFE

American Cafe, 4 Pennsylvania Ave., (410) 321-4800. The American Cafe in Towson has exactly the same menu, trendy decor and young, friendly staff as the one in Harborplace. But how many people know it exists except for those who work in downtown Towson? That may change as more people go to the movies at Towson Commons, but now there's none of the wait American Cafe fans are used to downtown. Stick to first courses, sandwiches or salads, though. Neither of our main courses worked very well. Or go for dessert and coffee. You'll love specialties like the warm apple cobbler with ice cream. $$ -- moderate. (Last reviewed 10/92.)

MUSEUM CAFE

Museum Cafe, Baltimore Museum of Art, Art Museum Drive, (410) 235-3930. The Museum Cafe is one of those restaurants I want to love. If it's too cool to eat on the terrace, the contemporary dining room is pleasing to the eye and soothing to the senses, especially when night falls and the room is filled with candlelight. The menu has changed since I was there last, and I like the fact that there's a good selection of "light fare" dishes for under $10. Alas, the kitchen didn't do very well with scallops in black bean sauce or a seafood burrito or cannelloni with spinach and three cheeses. Maybe the safest thing would be to stick to the crab cakes. $$ -- moderate. (Last reviewed 10/92.)
