Kings and Walt Williams remain at impasse

SAN DIEGO — ...C SAN DIEGO -- Sacramento Kings owner Jim Thomas and team president Rick Benner met yesterday with unsigned first-round draft choice Walt Williams and attorney Len Elmore, but no agreement was reached.

The meeting was held in a downtown Baltimore hotel that served as a median point for the Kings' executives, who were in

New York for league meetings, and Williams and Elmore, two former Maryland Terrapins who reside in the Washington, D.C., area.

The Kings did not change their offer, believing their seven-year, $15.2 million proposal to Williams represents fair market value.

Williams and Elmore believe the $1.14 million first-year salary of that contract is not representative of the market. They would prefer a five-year contract, though they probably would settle for a six-year deal.

Elmore came away feeling the meeting was somewhat productive.

"It was a cordial meeting in which a lot of things were discussed," Elmore said. "It seems there is a genuine effort to get this thing done, and we are more than happy to help with that."

Elmore says the lines of communication remain open, although there are no firm plans to meet.
