Green Haven group joins opposition to prison plan

The Green Haven Improvement Association has joined the chorus of community groups opposing construction of a 650-bed jail.

Green Haven residents are circulating petitions against plans to locate a county prison on the old Schramm's Turkey Farm near Mountain and Waterford roads. Petitions are available at the Schramm's store on Mountain Road and the Welcome Inn at Outing and Wise avenues. Groups in Severna Park and South County also are organizing against plans to place the jail in their areas.

A county task force, which will recommend a site to County Executive Robert R. Neall and the County Council, will listen to public comments on the proposals at 7 p.m. today at the Glen Burnie High School auditorium. Speakers must sign up by 6 p.m. and will be limited to two minutes each. Written comments can be submitted to the Detention Center Siting and Alternative Sentencing Task Force, County Council of Anne Arundel County, Box 2700, Annapolis 21404.
