2 to replace Morgan's Braxton

October 19, 1992|By Paul McMullen

Morgan State will make two hires to replace Leonard Braxton, who is leaving to become track and field coach at Arizona State.

Braxton has been the Bears' athletic director since 1988, and in charge of its running programs since he came to the university in 1978. Raymond Downs, vice president for student affairs, said the Bears will hire one person as athletic director, and another as head coach for cross country and track and field.

"Leonard wasn't overwhelmed, but he certainly had a lot to do, and he did an outstanding job," Downs said. "Hopefully, we'll have a coach in place by the time Leonard leaves, but the athletic director position will require a much more extensive search. We're looking for someone who knows the athletics business, someone who can generate the resources we need."

Downs said that Morgan State will be advertising both vacancies soon.

Braxton has said he will remain at Morgan State through the first weekend of November, when the Bears host several Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships.
