Buell's sale inches closer to final step

The Howard County Liquor Board tentatively approved the transfer of a liquor license last week from Buell's restaurant on U.S. Route 40 to a Chinese restaurant that is expected to take its place. The transfer is the last hurdle to selling Buell's, which has served home-style cooking along U.S. 40 for the past 53 years.

The new restaurant, "Uncle Y.Y.'s," could serve beer, wine and alcohol, but not as carryout items, the board said. The board is expected to make a final decision in the next two to four weeks.

Man is charged with child abuse

Howard County police charged a 26-year-old Columbia man Tuesday with allegedly abusing his 2-year-old son for spitting food out of his mouth, police said.

Eric Dwayne Jones was arrested at the family's home in the 5000 block of Green Mountain Circle after the toddler's grandmother told police the child's back and buttocks were bruised, police said.

Mr. Jones is being held in lieu of $5,000 bond at the Howard County Detention Center. Police said they learned Mr. Jones allegedly struck the toddler with a ruler repeatedly.
