Arts Unlimited for Literacy opens today in Towson

Performances by Peabody Institute dance students and members of the Baltimore Actors' Theatre will mark today's opening of Arts Unlimited for Literacy, a new arts and crafts gallery in Towson. A project of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Arts Center, the non-profit gallery will show work by more than 100 local artists. Twenty-five percent of the sales will benefit Baltimore County Literacy Works. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and entertainment begins at 1:30 p.m. today. The gallery, located in the Mercantile-Towson building, 409 Washington Ave., open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Auditions

Male actors aged 18 to 60 are needed for roles in "Skipjacks, Crab Traps and Gunny Sacks," an environmental play about the Chesapeake Bay presented by the Discovery Players, a touring company based at Cecil Community College. The group performs for young audiences in schools, libraries, colleges and theaters throughout the tri-state area. Auditions are from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday at the Milburn Stone Memorial Covered Bridge Theatre on the college campus. For details, call (410) 287-1037.

Auditions for the "Nunsense" role of Sister Mary Leo and an understudy for all parts in the musical production will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Elkton Center Theater, Railroad Avenue, Elkton. The Covered Bridge Theatre will present "Nunsense" on Feb. 12, 13, 19, 20 and 21. For details, call (410) 287-1037.

Auditions for roles in "The Nutcracker," produced by the Maryland Ballet, are scheduled for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. next Sunday at the Ballet Academy of Baltimore, Falls Road and Bare Hills Avenue. Children's roles are open to all local dance students older than 6. They should wear leotards, tights and ballet slippers and be prepared to dance. Open Space Arts Organization has scheduled auditions for "Tomalise," a musical puppet theater production of "Thumbelina," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at 360 Main St. in Reisterstown. The production, which will use performers age 10 and above, requires voices only -- everyone must sing. It will run Dec. 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20. For details, call (410) 526-9377.
