Around the house

* Remove odors from plastic food containers. Place a piece of charcoal or crumpled newspaper inside before putting on the lids. Store overnight.

* If you've run out of coffee filters, use a white, non-fibrous sheet of paper toweling.

* Remove lipstick stains from cloth napkins. Rub a small amount of shampoo into soiled areas; let sit for a half-hour; launder as usual.

* Perk up windows quickly. Drape scarves or squares of fabric over curtain rods to create an instant valance. Make throw pillows or chair cushions to match.

* Store sweaters in a minimum amount of space. Fold in half horizontally, overlap sleeves in front and roll into a cylinder. Rolled sweaters take up less room and they are easier to remove when you are ready to wear them.

* If baby has wet the mattress, use baking soda to soak up moisture. First, blot stain with a thick towel. Apply baking soda over wet area and allow to sit until dry. Brush off soda.

In the garden

* Protect remaining vegetables in garden from frost. Newspapers, cloth, sheets of plastic, paper bags, cardboard boxes and old blankets are some of the ways you can extend your harvest.
