The look of the landscape

In the Maryland landscapes he has painted for the past two decades, Eugene Leake has proceeded from the tangible to the intangible. He is interested not so much in the objects of a landscape as in the effects produced by such phenomena as light and air, and his work has grown increasingly poetic over the years. The current show of his paintings at the C. Grimaldis Gallery continues through Nov. 1. Call (410) 539-1080. "Captains Courageous," the musical receiving its world premiere at Ford's Theatre in Washington (511 10th St., N.W.), is a splendidly realized adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's tale of a boy coming of age on the high seas. Composer Frederick Freyer and librettist Patrick Cook have not only written a bevy of sea chantey-inspired songs, they've forged a show that exudes sophistication without sacrificing the wide-eyed sensibility guaranteed to keep young theatergoers on the edge of their seats. Weekend show times are today at 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $23-$32, with family discounts available. For information, call (202) 347-4833.

J. Wynn Rousuck The time and place for organ fanciers is 6 p.m. tomorrow at Old St. Paul's Parish (309 Cathedral St.). That's when organist Rodney Hansen will tackle three masterpieces of the organ-and-orchestra repertory: Saint-Saens' mighty Symphony No. 3, Samuel Barber's brilliant "Festiva Toccata," and the witty and lyrical Concerto in G Minor of Francis Poulenc. Hansen, who served 19 years as the church's choirmaster and organist, will be joined by noted conductor Thomas Dunn and a 59-piece orchestra. Tickets for the concert, which is in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the parish, are $25 and can be purchased in advance by calling (410) 685-3404.
