Two schools burglarized; building equipment taken

Two southwest Carroll schools were the site of break-ins in recent weeks, Maryland State Police at the Westminster barracks reported.

Entry was gained through a rear window of the Mount Airy Middle School on Watersville Road Oct. 2. Nothing appeared to be missing, according to school officials.

That same day, burglars took a Lincoln Arc welder and other equipment after breaking in the Winfield Elementary School construction site on Salem Bottom Road Oct. 2, state police reported.

The welder belonged to a private contractor doing work at the school.

POLICE

* Mount Airy: The barking of a family dog apparently frightened away a would-be burglar who attempted to force the side basement door of a house on Saber Court about 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 1, state police reported. Investigators found pry marks on the door.

FIRE

* Mount Airy: Firefighters from Mount Airy assisted volunteers from Frederick County in extinguishing a truck fire on Old Bohn Road at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday.
