Murphy named Commended Student

Jennifer Murphy of Ellicott City, a senior at Mount de Sales Academy, has been named a Commended Student in the 1993 National Merit Scholarship Program.

About 35,000 students throughout the nation are being honored for their outstanding performance on the 1991 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which was the route of entry to the merit program.

* Ellicott City: 8400 block of Route 40: Two men, one armed with a handgun, robbed a Mobil gas station Friday, police said. As one man stood

in a doorway of the station, the other placed a black canvas bag on the counter, partially displayed a gun, and demanded that the attendant fill the bag with cash. After getting an undisclosed amount of cash, the men fled in an older-model white sedan with rust spots on the right rear quarter panel.

* 3200 block of Wheaton Way: Between Oct. 3 and Saturday, a VCR was discovered missing. There were no signs of forced entry.

* 10300 block of Waverly Woods Drive: A tan 1991 Honda Accord was stolen between Friday and Saturday. The Maryland plates are YTG-937.

* 8400 block of Baltimore National Pike: Someone attempted to steal a 1985 Toyota Cressida from the Normandy Brunswick Bowling Lanes on Friday.

* 9300 block of Route 40: Someone smashed glass to a pharmacy and took narcotics Monday.

* 8300 block of Route 40: Someone smashed glass at a gas station and took several generators Friday.

* Elkridge: 6200 block of Route 1: Someone tried to pry off plywood from an empty storage building and tampered with doors to a lunch wagon at the Elkridge Drive-In between Friday and Saturday. A cooler was reported missing from the lunch wagon.
