Gas station request sent back for work

The county Planning Board told the Rouse Co. to do its homework yesterday and refused to recommend a special exception for a gas station at the new Snowden Square shopping center on Snowden River Parkway.

"It's a skewed presentation," board Chairwoman Kay Partridge said of the company's information on whether the proposed Crown station is needed in the area.

At issue was the lack of information on other gas stations within a 7 1/2 -mile radius -- the same area the company used to show demand for gasoline. Zoning regulations require a petitioner to prove a need for a gasoline station before the county Board of Appeals can grant a special exception for it. The appeals board must also receive a recommendation from the Planning Board before considering any petition.

"I have seen nothing to indicate that people aren't getting their gas anyway," Ms. Partridge said.

Information provided by the Rouse Co. dealt only with other gas stations in a 1 1/2 -mile radius.

The board tabled the special exception petition until Rouse Co. officials bring back an accounting of other stations and their sales in the 7 1/2 -mile area.
