A 24-year-old Howard County woman and her 4-year-old son were killed when the car she was driving ran off Marriottsville Road No. 2 and struck a tree just after midnight yesterday. Another son was severely injured.

Crystal Lynn Sincox, who lived in the 500 block of Arrow Way near Columbia, was driving a 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 west about one mile south of Route 26 in Sykesville in Carroll County when she lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center line and crashed into the tree, state police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Daniel I. Welliver, assistant deputy medical examiner.

Four-year-old Lee Wayne Sincox Jr. had been sitting in the back seat behind his mother.

He died at Baltimore County General Hospital as a result of injuries he sustained in the accident, according to the investigating officer, Tfc. Matt Breeding of the Maryland State Police.

Christopher Lee Sincox, 2, the second passenger, was sitting in the rear on the passenger side.

He was flown to the Johns Hopkins Hospital Children's Center, police reported. He was in critical and stable condition late yesterday.

None of the car's occupants was using a seat belt or other safety restraint.

Police said speed and a wet surface were factors in the crash.

Yesterday's accident brought to 21 the number of automobile fatalities this year in Carroll, compared with 15 deaths during the same period last year.
