Loyola shuts down Columbia, 1-0 Men's soccer

LYNCHBURG, VA. — Freshman midfielder Dave Briles scored the only goal with 7:41 elapsed to give Loyola a 1-0 soccer victory over Columbia yesterday at Curley Field.

It was the fourth straight victory for the Greyhounds (8-2-1) and the 35th career shutout and sixth this season by goalkeeper Shawn Boehmcke. He is tied for seventh in NCAA history in that category.

Navy 3, Fordham 0

Cliff Carpenter broke the school record for career assists, adding two for a total of 16 in host Navy's win over Fordham. Carpenter broke the old standard set by Jim Mulik (1987-90). Seth Walters scored two goals and Marc Boran added another to pace Navy's (8-4, 3-2) victory.

Junior midfielder Mike Roz led a trio of single scorers as St. Mary's (4-4-1, 3-2) downed Goucher in a Capital Athletic Conference game. Roz scored 2:37 into the game.

Braxton Hyre scored three goals, including two in overtime, to lead St. Francis of New York in a Northeast Conference match.

The Mount (4-6-2, 1-3) scored twice in five minutes to take a 2-1 lead with 32:46 remaining. Craig Neverosky and Karl Taverner tallied the goals.

St. Francis (5-6-1, 4-1-1) forced the overtime with 10:55 left on a goal by Sherwyn Besson, and Hyre scored his two goals in the first overtime.

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- James Wright scored two goals in the second half to lead Liberty (9-2, 3-1) over UMBC (6-7, 3-2) in a Big South Conference game.

Wright's goals came at the 35-minute mark and the 32:49 mark. Shawn Miller scored UMBC's lone goal at the 6:21 mark. The loss was UMBC's third straight.
