Sign me or trade me, Williams tells Kings

October 08, 1992|By McClatchy News Service

SACRAMENTO -- Walt Williams likely will miss the opening of Sacramento Kings training camp at University of California, Davis tomorrow, barring a sudden and dramatic change in the direction of negotiations between his representative and the Kings.

Len Elmore, Williams' attorney, said the Kings' position displayed in talks Wednesday was tantamount to an ultimatum.

"This seems to be that either [owner] Jim Thomas cannot afford Walt or chooses not to pay him what the market has dictated as fair," Elmore said. "If that's the case, then the Kings should trade Walt for a player whom they can afford to pay.

"What they gave us translates into a 'take it or leave it' proposition. I am extremely pessimistic."

Neither Elmore nor Kings president Rick Benner would address the specific numbers, but it is believed the Kings did not make any substantial movement from its proposal of a $1.9 million average over six years.
