State police have released a report that offers the most detailed and chilling account so far of former Savage volunteer firefighter James Scott Botschen's alleged crime spree.

According to the report, which was released last week, Botschen ordered prostitutes to do bizarre things and attacked or threatened them with a knife. The 16-page report also describes photos confiscated from Botschen that show the undressing and beating of one of his victims.

"A lot of people we've talked to would like to see this guy behind bars," said state Trooper John Grant, referring to prostitutes and others police have interviewed about Botschen.

Botschen has been charged with attacking three women and raping a fourth on four consecutive nights in early September in the northeast section of Anne Arundel County near the mouth of the Patapsco River. He is being held in the Anne Arundel Detention Center without bond.

Police have issued a warrant for his arrest in the rape of another prostitute in Frederick County in 1991. In a separate incident, he pleaded guilty in January to beating a woman in Anne Arundel and received an 18-month suspended sentence.

Botschen, 31, has pleaded not guilty to an 11-count indictment in two of the September attacks. He is awaiting arraignment on assault and sexual offense charges in the other two attacks.

After Botschen's arrest last month, police discovered numerous photographs of women. Some were clothed, some partly undressed and others naked, the report said. The photos went back as far as 10 years, Trooper Grant said.

Some of the photos show women who are smiling and others depict women wearing anxious expressions, according to the report.

Last week's report also contains interviews with two victims of the September attacks.

The woman who was attacked Sept. 2 said Botschen forced her to perform a sexual act and threatened to stab her with a knife, the report said. He also held a gun to her head and threatened to kill her if she did not do as he asked, the report says. Botschen photographed the 28-year-old woman naked in his car, the report says, before ordering her out.

Early the morning before, Botschen tried to stab a 32-year-old prostitute after she performed a sexual act, the report says. After a struggle, she broke free and escaped.

Two nights later, Botschen pulled a large knife on another prostitute saying, "Do what I want or I'll use it," according to the report. He photographed her naked and then ordered her to urinate. Afterward, he raped her, she told police.

The woman escaped and called police from a nearby business. Employees told police that she was the second prostitute attacked and abandoned in the area in two nights.

Police staked out the area the morning of Sept. 4 and arrested Botschen in his car with a half-dressed, hysterical woman. Police said she told them he had been trying to kill her. During a search of the vehicle, they discovered several photographs of naked women that led them to earlier victims, police records say.
